I stand here,
on the edge
of life
and death
I wonder.
What would it be like to step off?
To give up,
To stop trying,
and fall.
To be,
for one short long moment,
free.
I wonder.
The ocean streches before me,
the sky arches above,
Rocks reach for me,
Sea frothing around them.
I step to the edge,
my toes curling around the crumbling rock.
Birds swirl through the air,
calling,
weeping.
They seem lonely,
as if they are calling me.
I wonder.
What would it be like to fly?
To join the birds,
the seagulls, terns, pipers,
and just soar and wheel above.
Careless, unworried,
and for a short long moment,
free.
I wonder.
Almost without thinking,
I step forward,
lightly,
as if stepping
onto solid ground
and I fall,
arms spreading like wings,
hair streaming behind,
like feathers.
The wind whispers across my skin,
stealing away something,
something like
fear
pain
sadness
despair.
Something like
courage
love
joy
hope.
Until there is only one thing.
Something like
air,
kisses,
or frosting,
but better.
Freedom
Death waits for me kindly below
it leaves me this long short moment
where the wind holds me softly
close and kind,
unjudging,
leaving me
free.
And
Death
is
Free
too.
on the edge
of life
and death
I wonder.
What would it be like to step off?
